Young Ambassador Award

Young people across 105SW are making a real difference in their communities and again this year Lions Clubs are being asked to identify these young people as candidates for the Lions Young Ambassador of the 21st century Award

Young people involved in the district in the last 4 years have supported a wide range of causes and initiatives including welding of Christmas reindeer, stars and wreaths, raising funds for his local foodbank. Supporting a local guide unit, helping with younger groups weekly and at camp as well as other community involvement, the project was to purchase tents so that the Guides could regularly attend camps, as well as involvement with other local groups. Another finalist’s main project was to support young people at Avalon Camps and recognising the need to improve toilet facilities set to raising money and involving the local community as volunteers. Encouraging young people to learn an instrument by providing weekly lessons at an after-school club as well as playing with Lions Brass 4 Youth was the project of a 2025 candidate.

The scheme is open to young people aged 15-18, nominated by a Lions or Leo club and offers an opportunity not only to gain recognition locally and nationally, but potentially to progress through to the national and even European finals. 

​

Judges are particularly interested in the candidate’s commitment to community service, alongside their personality, leadership qualities and ability to communicate their passion for helping others. 

​

For the successful candidates, the rewards can be significant. The overall Multiple District Young Ambassador receives bursaries totaling £1,500, opportunities to represent the UK at European level, invitations to major Lions events and the chance to further develop leadership and public speaking skills. 

​

All eight finalists at the national final receive a bursary of £500 in recognition of their achievements, to use further their community project. The winner of the 105SW Award receives a further prize of £200.

​

The National Final will take place over the weekend of February 19th- 21st 2027.

​

However, the Young Ambassador award is about much more than trophies or bursaries. It’s about recognising remarkable young people who are already quietly making a difference in their communities. Many young people don’t realise just how valuable their volunteering, caring and community involvement really is. This award gives them confidence, encouragement and opportunities that can genuinely help shape their future.

As the MD Young Ambassador 2025 said “I want to thank the Lions. When a young person has the support of an organisation like Lions, we get inspired, uplifted and boy, do we grow!”

An exciting aspect of the scheme is the Tall Ships Youth Trust Shipshape Award.  This special award gives one finalist the opportunity to take part in a potentially life-changing adventure at sea aboard a tall ship, helping develop teamwork, resilience and leadership skills alongside other young people from a variety of backgrounds and abilities. Two 105SW Young Ambassadors have received this award in the last 3 years and will tell you how much they learnt and what a great time they had.

The ideal candidates are not necessarily those with the longest list of achievements, but young people who genuinely care about others and are prepared to make a difference.
