Our Quest - BSL Level 1
It is our aim to have at least 5 members of each club trained to BSL Level 1.
Hearing support is a key area of Lions service. Across the South West, Lions clubs help improve access to hearing aids, support hearing‑related charities, and raise awareness of hearing loss, particularly among older people and those facing barriers to support.

A strong relationship has been established with The Deaf Academy in Exmouth and we are delighted that Lion Charotte Tait, herself a graduate of the Academy, has taken on the role of our district deaf awareness coordinator with a massive amount of enthusuiasm and commitment.

Did you know
Because the South West has one of the oldest populations in England, it also has a disproportionately high rate of hearing loss compared with many other regions.
-
Hearing loss rises sharply with age — affecting about 55% of people over 60 and up to 80% by age 80.
-
The South West has the oldest median age of any English region, so its communities contain more people in these high-risk age groups than most of the country.
-
As a result, the region faces unusually high demand for audiology, hearing aids, and accessible communication services — often more than local services were historically designed for.
