The Golden District Convention 2020

Thursday 19  to Sunday 22  March 2020

District Governor Jim and your committee want to bring you a convention to remember; a convention that comes in on budget (or thereabouts); a convention that is full of fun; a convention that is full of friendship.

The Golden Convention, by popular acclaim returns again to Croyde Bay Holiday Resort the delights of which are known to most of you. However, for those who will be visiting for the first time please read on.

Since last coming together at Convention 2019 105SW has increased its number of clubs and members due to Climate Change, Brexit or is it Re-Districting. Whatever the reason the District Governor and your committee are hoping that as many members and clubs, new to the foibles of 105SW, will come to find out how we do it. Yes the traditions will be different and yes it will be strange and no not all differences will be acceptable, but unless you come from these new clubs changes to the perhaps ‘stick-in-the mud’ ways of Darkest SW will remain with us forever. Please help us make this Convention not only fun and enjoyable but let us make it a forum for new ideas and new – and lasting – friendships.

Croyde Bay Holiday Resort

Croyde Bay Holiday Resort is owned and run by the trade union Unison and all facilities, including hotel and cottages, are easily accessible by those of you with mobility or other physical difficulties, either by level (or slightly sloping) walkways or lifts. The cottages are all ‘wrapped up and snug’ against any inclement weather although the pathways to and from the Conference Hall are in the open and have a slight slope each way; the walk is approximately less than 100 metres. There is plenty of parking including disabled spaces, a reception and bar area, dining room, spacious lounge, swimming pool and small fitness suite. The conference room sits up to 250 delegates and it has full audio visual facilities including a “hearing loop”. 

The Resort is about 15 minutes walk from the village of Croyde and it is a short walk to Croyde Bay with plenty of opportunity for walking –  including around Baggy Point! There is a bus service to Barnstaple from outside the venue.

International Guest

Our International Guest will be International Director Lion Geoff Leader accompanied by his wife Lion May. 

The format

Once again there is the option to start the weekend on Thursday by booking for three nights. This is  becoming a popular option and gives guests the opportunity to ease themselves in for the weekend. The dinner on Thursday evening will be a table d’hôte menu.

The Friday evening will be Party Night and will follow the theme of Gold.  Please check back for further News for more details. Entertainment is to be finalised and will be announced in later News. Later in the evening there will be a disco – again information to follow –  to get everyone on their feet and keep the party going until late (or perhaps early).

After breakfast on Saturday and prior to the start of business we will be entertained by the Lions Brass4Youth, who will be in the Convention Hall from about 9.00 am (if not earlier) the Business Sessions will cover the key elements of our Annual General Meeting. District Governor Jim wishes business to be accessible to all non-Lions and extends a warm welcome accordingly.

A hot lunch will be available on Saturday and must be booked and menus chosen in advance. There will also be a ‘packed lunch’ available which must also be booked and sandwich fillings chosen in advance. (Please see booking page) The cooked lunch will be served in the restaurant and the packed lunch in the Dune Bar.

Speeches at the District Governor’s Gala Dinner will be kept to a minimum. Dinner will be followed by the disco and for those of you that wish to sit and have a chin wag the Dune Bar will again be available.

The format for Sunday morning has not yet been finalised so, again, watch this space.

A pre-booked roast Sunday Lunch will be available as an optional extra at a cost of £12.50. Why not round off the weekend with a roast lunch and so avoid the cooking and washing up for another day!

The Theme

District Governor Jim has made GOLD his theme. DG Jim sees this as his GOLDEN opportunity to welcome the new clubs and their members into the new District 105SW and he does this most warmly. 


As previously we will have sole occupancy for the weekend. There is a choice of accommodation – in either hotel rooms or fully winterised chalets/cottages. Please indicate your preference on the booking form and please note that it is first come first served so book early to ensure your first choice. 

The Atlantic cottages will again be split in two to enable us to accommodate more guests. Each half has its own bathroom and the linking doors will be locked effectively providing a double room and bathroom. If all the cottages are not taken the earliest bookings will have an entire cottage. Please indicate if you wish to share a chalet/cottage with someone else enabling you to have full use of both a lounge area and kitchen together with two double rooms and two bathrooms.

If any members wish to bring their own children for the weekend please contact me with accommodation requirements and for details of cost. Both types of accommodation have a number of rooms with disabled facilities so please also indicate on the booking form if you require this facility. In addition there are a number of chalets available to those members who wish to bring their dog(s) with them. There is a supplement of £10.00 per dog. This applies to all dogs other than assistance dogs for which there is no charge.

Booking Forms & Payment

All Booking Forms should be completed and returned to PDG Lion Graham Marshall (see details on booking form) who has taken over as Bookings Coordinator by 31st January 2020. This is essential to ensure that we get your booking requirements to the venue before their cut-off.

Payment can be made either by cheque with the booking form or online payments can be made from your bank. Details are on the booking form.

Finally . . .

It has become inevitable this year that savings in time and cost – mostly cost – must be made and to that end the committee are looking into all areas. However, there is one saving that will be made not only for cost reasons but also the health of all Lions at Convention it is with deep regret that there will be NO CREAM TEA.
