YOUNG AMBASSADOR OF THE 21st CENTURY

YOUNG AMBASSADOR OF THE 21st CENTURY SCHEME

The aim of the scheme which operates internationally is to recognise, encourage and support young people who are actively involved in community service work. In the past, candidates have been involved in helping the disabled and the elderly, conservation, crime prevention, promoting healthier lifestyles, hospital radio, etc
Through the Scheme Lion, Leo and Lioness Clubs sponsor selected young people who have demonstrated a commitment to the Lions ideal of service to the community.

Having been selected by Lion, Leo or Lioness Club candidates will be interviewed by a Club panel of judges, and if successful a further panel of judges at other levels up to and including District.

This year District 105SW Young Ambassador Final was held at Crafthole Memorial Hall, Torpoint, on Sunday 6th January 2008. The Clubs represented were, Babbacombe & St. Marychurch;Camborne & Redruth; Crediton;Crewkerne; Newquay; Sidmouth; South Molton & Torpoint & Rame Peninsula.

The judges said it was a very difficult decision to make, as all the young people brought something different to their attention and that they were all so enthusiastic. They said if these represent our future, then we are in good and safe hands. One judge, being a police officer, said he is used to dealing with the more antisocial side of today's youth and he was privileged to see the other side of our youth. The judges congratulated each and everyone of the candidates, having chosen Alex White from South Molton to represent 105SW;

As the person selected at the District Final Alex will represented this Lions District at the Multiple District Final which took place at Dudley in Worcestershire at the Dudley Village Hotel on Friday 15th. Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th of February 2008. There were thirteen candidates for UK and Ireland Lions Young Ambassador of the year 2008/9. There are more details about the Multiple District Competition on the Multiple District Web site.

Candidates were selected to represent their Districts at the MD Final each received £500 to spend on their chosen cause.

Whilst only a relatively small number of candidates can hope to receive one of these bursaries, the main purpose of the Scheme is to encourage Lion, Leo and Lioness Clubs to actively encourage and support community service work by young people in their local communities by supporting the particular initiatives and projects brought to their attention by young people wishing to participate in the Young Ambassador of the 21 Century Scheme. It also benefits the personal development of each and every applicant/candidate.

The Scheme is open to candidates of either sex who have reached their 15th birthday but not yet reached their 19th birthday on or before 30th June in the year in which the MD final is to be held.

Candidates must be sponsored by a Lion, Leo or Lioness club based in the British Isles and Ireland.

Members of Leo and Lioness Clubs are eligible to put themselves forward for selection as a candidate provided that they are not sponsored by their own Club. Previous recipients of the Multiple-District Bursary are not eligible for selection as candidates.

The selection of candidates to proceed further in the Scheme will be a panel of 3 non-Lion judges [male and female) covering the areas of education, youth work or community service and industry or commerce.

In reaching the decision the Panel of Judges will take into account.

  1. The extent of the candidate's involvement in community service. This will equate to a minimum of 50% of any marks available.
  2. The personality an leadership qualities of the candid (15%)
  3. The candidate's proposals for the use of the bursary (15%).
  4. The ability to speak for up to 3 minutes about the candidates service activities (20%).

The Multiple-District Award consists of:

In addition 12 District bursaries of £500 are awarded to be used in a similar manner to the Multiple-District Award. Prizes/ awards are presented at other levels of the competition at line discretion of the Club or District involved.

No candidate may be related to a member of a judging panel.

In addition to completing the application form attached, each candidate selected by a Club to proceed further in the Scheme will need to produce a written statement detailing their proposals for the use of the bursary which, us already noted, must personally involve the candidate. It is not appropriate to propose to use the bursary as a cash gift to a charity or hospital etc., nor is it appropriate to use the bursary to purchase equipment, etc., for a project with which the candidate will not be involved.

In the event of any dispute regarding the interpretation of the rules of the Young Ambassador of line 21st Century Scheme or in the terms of the proposed use of the bursary, the decision of the Multiple-District Young Ambassador of the 21st Century Committee shall be final.
