Most of you will be reading this while I am at the DGEs school in Minneapolis, prior to the International Convention and I ask to be in your thoughts when along with 750 other DGs from around the world I am sworn in on 10th July. My motto for this year is “Lions ROAR”, which stands for Reach Out, Act, Respond. I would like to think of this as not only being my motto, but that of the District, each Club, and indeed every Lion. I feel that in the current economic climate we should be thinking of ways that we can address the way in which we provide service, especially as fund raising becomes harder.
To this end, at an excellent Incoming Officers Day, (many thanks again to Lion Malcolm Hill) I suggested having Table Top sales in the outlying villages, to give members of the communities the opportunity to sell unwanted articles, and to enable them to obtain goods at less than shop prices. This would also give us the opportunity to advertise ourselves as a caring organisation as well as promoting our Clubs. As Lions we need to be brave and explore other avenues of service, and these need not be expensive.
I also have two challenges for each President. The first is to attend a Cabinet meeting; this will enable you to find out what goes on and how decisions are made on your behalf. (Please let Dave Atkins know of your intention, so we can make sure that we have enough chairs!) The second is to do something completely new this year.
The incoming International President, Lion Eberhard Wirfs has “Move to Grow” as his motto, and his aim is that we grow in membership as well as maintaining our momentum in providing service. As part of his logo Eberhard Wirfs chose a leaf of the Gingko tree because he feels that it captures the spirit of Lionism. It is the oldest tree species in the world and so represents a rich heritage and longevity as well as adaptability, utility and sustainability.
If you would like to invite Peter and I to join you at your Club Charter Anniversary this year, please consider asking us in writing as soon as you know your date, as it will be first come, first served (I have already turned down one invitation for next March!). In fact if you would like us to attend ANY Club function please do ask.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Past District Governor Lion Graham and Heather for looking after the District so well this past year, thus allowing me the opportunity of guiding our strong District into the second decade of the Millennium and our 40th year of Service.
Yours in Lionism
