360 Lions, partners and guests assembled at the Holiday Inn, Plymouth over the weekend to join in the Fun and Friendship of the 38th Annual Convention of District 105 SW, under the leadership of our District Governor Lion Brenda Wood. We were privileged to have as our International Guest P.I.D. Lion Terry Graham accompanied by his wife Lion Jean, who are from Ontario, Canada. We also greeted P.I.D. Lion Roger and P.D.G. Lion Rosemary Richert from Renton USA, who are long standing friends of D.G. Brenda and P.D.G.John Wood. From our twin District 103W we welcomed Lion Jean-Maurice Coudre and his wife Michele.

Party night on the Friday saw nearly all of the 218 Lions and partners who attended, dressed up as a variety of representations of the theme “Gardeners World “There were many gnomes, bugs and bees plus a fairy from the bottom of the garden. With so many brilliant entries the judges, our International guests and their wives found choosing winners from the 20 Clubs which entered very difficult. After much deliberation they awarded the trophy to Torpoint & Rame Peninsula Club for their prominent flowers. There followed numerous entries in the couples and singles section and with much difficulty the winners were judged to be the Bee keeper and the Bee, who were Chas & Lorna Linsell from Worle Club.

The Saturday morning Business Session started with the Flag Ceremony, directed with military precision by John Northcote-Brewer and ex members of local Service organisations. The Lord Mayor of the City of Plymouth Councillor David James formally opened Convention. The Session continued with the reports from District Officers, the consideration of only two Resolutions, and the voting for D.G and V.D.G for 2008/09. Lion Graham Lang (Looe) was appointed as District Governor.-Elect and Lion Christine Rowe (Launceston) as Vice District Governor-Elect .An impressive presentation was given by Alex White the Young Ambassador finalist, sponsored by the Lions Club of South Molton The afternoon session include a presentation by Lion Keith Wellington on Campaign SightFirst II, “Lions’ Vision for All”.

P.I.D. Lion Terry Graham made the presentation of the trophies to winners and runners up of the District Competitions, which were:-

P.I.D. Terry Graham gave an insight to his work while on the International Board and his experiences during his travels as an International Director, whilst not losing sight of his commitment as a member of his Lions Club.

307 Lions, partners and guests sat down to enjoy the Gala Dinner on the Saturday evening. After the speeches there followed some energetic dancing to the Edison Lighthouse duo. The evening was brought to an end with D.G. Lion Brenda, John & members of their family occupying the centre of the circle for Auld Langs Syne.

The traditional Sunday morning informal session saw P.I.D. Lion Terry Graham, PID Lion Roger Richert and D.G Lion Brenda answering a variety of questions on topics relating to different aspects of Lionism, including the pros and cons of initiating Campus Clubs.

It is hoped that all who attended the District Convention enjoyed the experience and made new friends whilst joining in the Fun and Friendship generated by the weekend’s events.
